However, we can all remember when we were working for a leader and when we were working for a manager. The manager will direct an employee to complete a task and will take the responsibility of ensuring the employee does so. The leader will communicate to the employee the mission, get the employee to understand their role in the mission and have them accept the responsibility of reaching the agreed objectives. An example would be when a typical manager will say to an employee “Get me the report in the file”. The employee will look in the file and, if the report is not there, will come back to the manager and advise the manager that the report is not in the file. The leader will explain to the employee that they need the report and let the them determine how he or she is going to get their hands on the report.
Leaders have the ability to connect with their employees’ hearts. They empower their workers by trusting their employees’ ability to perform and having them accept responsibility for the results. In other words they choose to coach people rather than to manage them. Every coach knows that whenever a person accepts to invest themselves emotionally in a task they will perform at their highest level.
