Can you name five of your personal values in 10 seconds? Don’t worry, few people can. We all think that we know what are our values but, do we really? How many people have actually taken the time to articulate their values? Becoming intimately knowledgeable of one’s values is important as it is the foundation of who we are as human beings. Knowing our values not only helps us understand who we are, but it also explains why we do the things we do.
In every aspect of our lives we must determine what is most important to us and decide to be guided by these values, no matter what it is we dealing with. Our personal integrity is based on our values. They should be our compass on every step of our journey on this earth. This compass will guide us through every storm. If ever you take a decision that is not congruent to your values you will know it as you will feel a sense of discomfort the minute the decision is taken. Decisions taken through the lens of our values may not always be easy but, in the long run, we’ll be more at peace with those decisions. Feelings of guilt are, most often, the price of not having lived up to our own values.                      Leaders who communicate their values and live by them will greatly enhance the loyalty and respect of their employees which, in turn, will result in a higher retention rate of personnel. Leadership is the ability to influence, but it is very difficult to have influence when there is a clash of values. We unconsciously choose our friends, our mates, our professions, our political leaders, our employers and our communities based on values we share with them.
